Tips to take the high road and make divorce easier

by | Jan 23, 2018 | Divorce

Divorce can be tough. It can take weeks or even months for everything to come together. That’s a long time for you and your spouse to deal with each other if you’re not exactly on the best of terms.

If you have kids, though, the important thing is to focus on being parents. Don’t worry about becoming exes. Focus on the kids and make the divorce go as smoothly and easily as you can for them.

To help, here are a few tips to consider.

  • Allow for scheduling flexibility when you’re sharing custody of the kids. If your spouse needs to make a change, don’t refuse to help out just because you’re angry. Be flexible so that you get more time with your children. Focus on the positive.
  • Be friendly when you pick up or drop off the kids. Smile, shake hands and make small talk. You don’t want the kids to feel stressed. You don’t have to be best friends, but try to get along in front of them.
  • If you talk to your kids about your spouse, and you will because they’ll have a lot of questions, try to avoid the negatives and focus on the positives. You may not be happy with each other, but remember that your kids still think of the other person as their parent. Don’t try to ruin that relationship.
  • Don’t be petty, and don’t let petty things build up. They may feel small, but they can lead to a full-blown fight, which you never want to have in front of your children.

This doesn’t mean you should just roll over and let your spouse control everything. You need to know your rights and fight for them. You can still work to eliminate the type of conflict that will impact your kids.
