What documents should I gather for my divorce attorney?

by | Sep 11, 2016 | Divorce

Many people who have gone through a divorce would probably describe the process as stressful and time-consuming. With couples not always seeing eye to eye on certain matters and people letting their emotions get in the way, there is no telling how long the process will last. In addition to the variety of topics that couples must discuss with their attorneys and each other, there are also a variety of documents that must be examined by their attorney before the divorce process can actually get going.

Prior to your divorce, you should gather the following documents for your attorney:

  • Bank statements.
  • Utility bills.
  • Wills.
  • Proof of monthly income.

Many of the documents that you should gather for your attorney are financial and legal documents. Before you and your attorney can speak with your spouse and their attorney, your attorney needs to know about your property and assets, how much they are worth and what your own, personal interests may be. There is a chance that your attorney may request more documents from you, like tax returns and your prenuptial agreement, if there is one. Examining these documents can help them get a clearer picture of your financial situation and save you time and money.

Divorce can be confusing as there is so much that needs to be done in order for things to be finalized. From issues with your finances to dealing with your emotions, there is a lot that can happen during the course of a divorce. If there is any confusion before, during or after your divorce, you can contact an attorney who can assist you through the process.
