Can ex-spouses still work together?

by | Mar 16, 2017 | Divorce

If you own a business with your soon-to-be ex-spouse in Oneida, you may be wondering if you should continue to work with your partner. Just because you are divorcing your spouse does not mean that you have to give up your stake in the business. You may already know how challenging it is for significant others to work together. Trying to keep business matters separate from personal ones is often challenging. But it may be possible for you to maintain a positive working relationship with your former partner if you take some time to plan your approach.

Take some time off

Things can become heated during your divorce. You and your ex-spouse may not see eye to eye on many things regarding your ending relationship with each other. Those feelings can spill over into your workplace, creating a toxic and uncomfortable environment for everyone. Taking time off from work can provide you with the opportunity to work through your situation without creating more conflict and hardship.

Establish goals

You should discuss your situation with your former partner. Both of you need to understand that since you are no longer a couple, your work roles and goals need to be redefined. Think long and hard about your new situation so you can discuss any changes that need to occur for you to maintain a healthy working relationship with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

Respect each other

Tensions tend to run high during divorces, making it hard for separating partners to communicate and work together efficiently. It is not uncommon for divorcing spouses to disrespect each other by making their lives more difficult at work. Since you and your former partner plan to continue working with each other during and after your divorce, you should start treating one another with respect. Stop using harsh and negative language when you refer or speak to your partner. Keep all conversations centered on work.

Create a partnership agreement

Many married couples do not think to create partnership agreements detailing how to split their business assets if either one of them decides to leave or sell their portion of the business. Even if your divorce is an amicable one, you should document any agreements and decisions you and your partner make about your business in writing.

The failure of marriage does not have to bring about the end of a business partnership. It may seem challenging for you to work with your former partner during this trying time. But you can minimize the impact of it on your business relationship with some preparation and the right approach. Matters involving business partnerships and divorces are often complicated. If you are struggling to work with your former partner, you should speak to an attorney for guidance.
