The divorce filing from actress Scarlett Johansson has sparked a child custody fight. The husband of Johansson, Romain Dauriac, claims he is shocked by her filing for divorce and that he believes it is a “pre-emptive strike” in a fight for the couple’s toddler daughter.
The actress filed for divorce from her husband on Tuesday in a New York City court. In her filing, Johansson said that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.” The news of the divorce filing comes on the back of an announcement in January that the couple split this past summer after less than two years of marriage.
Johansson has already asked for joint custody of the couple’s daughter, but wants her to live with her. Dauriac called the divorce shocking, especially the request for the daughter to live with Johansson because he has been the primary parent for the toddler while Johansson has been away for work.
Dauriac is planning to petition the court to let him take the couple’s daughter with him to France, his home country. Dauriac said Johansson will be able to see her daughter whenever she pleases, so long as she comes to France. He also said he was tired of running his life and his daughter’s life around Johansson’s shooting schedule.
Johansson issued the following statement in response to Dauriac’s comments:
“I am a devoted mother and private person. I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage. Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same.”
The couple signed a prenuptial agreement back in September of 2014, but it does not cover the topic of child custody or financial issues relating to their daughter.
