Refrain from social media use when going through divorce

by | Sep 7, 2018 | Divorce

It’s wise to refrain from using social media when going through a divorce. These accounts can easily get you into trouble. That’s especially true if you are trying to come away with a good settlement when the agreement is finalized. Here’s why social media can be so detrimental to your divorce.

A significant disadvantage with social media is the fact that it allows others the chance to make comments about your life. Even if you are avoiding getting into arguments with your spouse on social media, others might do so, thinking they are doing you a favor.

Your posts on social media could wind up coming back to haunt you in a divorce. Your spouse might see them and hand them to their attorney. Your spouse’s attorney could simply come across the questionable posts, which could include pictures of you with someone else or with new, expensive purchases.

It’s in your best interest to avoid using social media completely when going through a divorce. Don’t simply stop using it. Make sure you take down or delete your accounts so they are not visible to anyone.

If you must continue using social media while going through a divorce, maybe for your job, try to delete any inappropriate comments or posts that could be detrimental to your divorce proceedings.

You should always monitor how you use social media, but it becomes even more important if you are going through a divorce. You don’t want what you innocent post to be used against you and harm your chances of coming out on top in the divorce.
