The day that you realize your life is in danger because of an abusive spouse, you’re probably going to know that it’s time to leave. While this might seem easy to some, there are a lot of logistical concerns and emotional impacts that come with this decision.

One of the most important things to remember is that it’s always best to leave right away if you think you’re going to be harmed. Some spouses keep using mental abuse rather than physical. If the abuse is mental or emotional, you might have more time to plan your escape.

When you leave, try to grab important items like your driver’s license, bank card and any cash you have stashed in the home. These may help you as try to find a place to stay and work to rebuild a new life.

You’re going to need to file for a divorce. This starts the process of dividing up the assets and determining what’s going to happen with the children. There’s a chance that you’ll be able to handle this through mediation; however, some abusive spouses will try to prolong this process as long as possible because they think it will harm you to do so.

Remember, you have rights during the divorce process. Work closely with your attorney to ensure that your rights are being upheld. If you’re concerned about your ex attacking or harassing you, filing for a protective order might be in order.

No matter what happens, don’t let your ex convince you that you did anything wrong. You have the right to live a happy life that’s free of abuse of any sort. Set your goals and work toward starting your new life in the best way possible.
