How can we help our kids cope with the divorce?

On Behalf of | Jan 3, 2023 | Divorce

Sometimes, divorce can be the solution to an unhealthy and unhappy union. If you have decided to end your marriage, there’s a pretty good chance you will be thinking about more than just yourself. This is especially true if you have kids.

Divorce can impact children in a variety of ways. As such, it is important that you figure out how you will help them navigate the emotional and psychological toll that comes with this life event. Here are two tips that help you prepare your kids for life after your divorce.

Break the news of the divorce together

As soon as you arrive at the decision to dissolve your marriage, it is important that you and your ex present a united front when disclosing the news to the kids and going forward. This will give them the impression that the decision is mutual and that you have arrived at the decision in the best interest of everyone.

Timing is important when breaking this news, of course. Do not bring up the matter on a special occasion like a birthday party or when the kids are prepping for an important activity like an exam at school. Rather, find a day when everyone is relaxed and break the news to them.

Focus on your children’s lives, not yours

It’s easy to get into a detailed explanation regarding the circumstances that led to the divorce. However, this digression can confuse the kids and lead to more harm than good. Instead, focus on what is in the best interests of your children. And these include their physical, emotional and psychological well-being. Jointly assure your children that your love for them will never change and that both mom and dad will be there for them at all times.

Divorce can be a difficult moment for everyone involved. Find out how you can safeguard your children’s best interests during and after the divorce.
