2 tips for making virtual visits with your children less stressful

On Behalf of | Feb 28, 2025 | Child Custody

After parents end their romantic relationship, one parent may move away. This means that they won’t live in the same area as their children any longer. This isn’t an ideal situation, but it’s still possible for the parent and their child to have a meaningful relationship.

Technology makes it possible for parents and children to stay in contact using virtual visits. These aren’t meant as a replacement for in-person visits, but they can provide a

valuable connection. Considering these tips may help to make the virtual visits more successful without becoming stressful.

1. Set the routine

Virtual visits should be treated the same way as other parenting time. Once the schedule is set, both sides should stick to it unless there’s a valid reason to change. This can help to provide consistency for the child and can prevent last-minute conflicts.

The schedule that’s followed should be set based on the child’s availability. This is particularly important when there are time zone differences, so there’s a chance a parent may have to wake in the middle of the night to communicate with the child at a time that’s reasonable for the child.

2. Vary the way the visit goes

Keeping the interactions engaging is important so the parent and child can make memories. Some children may not be interested in just talking through every visit. Consider adding other activities, such as drawing, playing a game, reading a book or watching a show together.

The parent and child should be free to communicate freely during these visits. Unless there’s a valid concern for a child’s safety, communication should be uncensored by the parent who’s physically present with the child. It’s a good idea to have the specific terms for these virtual visits covered in the parenting plan.
