What should parents know about supervised visitation?

On Behalf of | May 10, 2025 | Child Custody

When parents go through divorce and possibly child custody disputes, emotions can run high. In some cases, a court may require supervised visitation to help ensure a child’s safety and well-being. While the term may sound a little harsh, supervised visits are meant to protect the child and help them maintain a healthy relationship with both parents.

Supervised visits can happen in a controlled setting, like a visitation center, or under the watch of a trusted adult in a more private setting. Supervised visitation is ordered when there is concern about a parent’s behavior, mental health or past issues like abuse. For many families, this arrangement is temporary and serves as a bridge to unsupervised time in the future.

Making the most of your time together

Supervised visits can feel awkward at first, but both parents have a role in making them positive for the child. It can be frustrating to be required to see your child under supervision. However, it’s crucial to put those feelings aside and make the most of your time together.

Here are some things to remember:

  • Stay child-focused: During the visits, keep the conversation centered around your child. Talk about school, hobbies or anything that brings them joy.
  • Be consistent: Come to the visits on time. This builds trust and security.
  • Avoid conflict: Do not speak negatively about the other parent or the situation. Always stay calm and respectful.
  • Be prepared: Bring games, books or snacks your child enjoys. This can make the visit more relaxed and fun.

These small efforts can create a sense of normalcy, even in a structured setting. As a result, your child will be more likely to feel safe and connected during visits — strengthening your bond in meaningful ways.

For the other parent, it is important to support your child emotionally. Let them know it is okay to enjoy the visit and remind them that both parents love them.

Supervised visitation can be challenging. However, the better it goes, the more likely it is to be a temporary situation. When emotions and legal issues mix, it helps to have legal support by your side.
