Tips for co-parenting a baby or toddler

On Behalf of | Aug 4, 2025 | Child Custody

Co-parenting a baby or toddler generally requires a significant degree of patience, frequent communication between parents and flexibility. Unlike older children, young ones cannot express their needs clearly and thrive on consistency. When a very young child needs to travel between households, it becomes especially important to work together in the child’s best interest.

Why is this so important? Maintaining a consistent routine is very important for babies and toddlers, as it is often a developmental necessity, not just an “ideal” to keep in mind. Sleep schedules, feeding times and nap patterns significantly impact a young child’s sense of stability. Both parents should strive to agree on a general routine and share updates regularly to minimize disruptions. Keeping track of any changes can help each parent prepare and support their child’s adjustment.

Additionally, because small children cannot explain what they’re experiencing, parents need to share information openly. This includes details like teething symptoms, mood changes, sleep regressions and new developmental milestones. A shared calendar or parenting app can make this easier and help avoid misunderstandings.

Additional considerations worth prioritizing

Flexibility is especially important in the early years. Babies and toddlers often experience sudden changes in behavior or health. One week, they may be sleeping through the night, and the next, they’re waking every few hours. Co-parents need to be adaptable and willing to revise plans as needed for the sake of the child’s well-being.

Also, transitions between homes can be hard on little ones. Parents should aim to make handoffs as calm and brief as possible. Bringing along familiar items such as a blanket or favorite toy can ease the transition. Prioritizing respectful communication and making child-centered decisions can build trust and cooperation over time.

Co-parenting a baby or toddler is rarely easy, but with mutual respect and shared goals, it can be done successfully. For co-parents of very small children, working with a skilled legal team to create a legal framework that supports both consistency and cooperation from the start can be very helpful.
